Firehouse Subs

Happy Friday!  As part of my #31DaysOfLove I wanted to include a feature on the most recent addition to the Firehouse Subs chain that opened in Largo in October. I was invited for an evening of “Subs and Stories” as I learned about this fabulous chain founded by firemen. Sometimes being a single mom that works two jobs is tough on my schedule, so I arrived late to the event and brought my kids along since I could not find a sitter. Everyone from Firehouse Subs treated my kids and I like family and we had a great time.

Founded in 1994 by former firefighting brothers, Chris and Robin Sorensen, Firehouse Subs is presently a 540-unit fast-casual chain and the only restaurant concept using a steaming method to create hot subs. Robin was present this evening and spoke to us about their unique and wonderful concept and how it was all conceived. His story warmed my heart and I learned that aside from using the best meats and cheeses (Butterball and Sargento) to create mouth-watering subs, they do a tremendous amount for the firefighting community.  In 2005, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation was established with a mission of providing funding, life-saving equipment and educational opportunities to first responders. To this date the Foundation has donated more than $5.2 million, making a difference in 32 states. How cool is that?

Our night of sub tasting began with their classic, Hook and Ladder. This was my first taste of a Firehouse Sub and it really left a delicious impression.  Smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, melted Montery Jack and served “fully involved.”  When a sub is “fully involved”, it comes loaded complete with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a dill spear on the side. I really love that term! This sub was fantastic the bread was so dang good! I love toasted subs and this one really hit the spot.

Next up was the Smokehouse Beef and Cheddar Brisket. HOLY SMOKES was this awesome! USDA Choice beef brisket smoked for over ten hours, melted cheddar and special sauces.  I had been craving some good ‘ole BBQ that week and this sandwich more than satisfied my craving. There is something about smoked brisket that just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This sub tickled my BBQ bone and I loved every last bite.

I think this next sub quite possibly made me fall in love with Firehouse Subs.  As the New York Steamer was placed in front of me, the scent of  corned beef brisket, pastrami, melted Provolone, mustard, mayo and Italian dressing filled the air and I was instantly brought back to my first trip to New York City back in 2003. I will never forget that trip, especially my lunch at Katz’s Deli and their famous pastrami sandwich. I never thought I would find something as good until I tasted this delicious little number. Looks like I found a place to go when my taste buds are in a New York  state of mind.

Our final sub was another winner, and how could it not be? Their Italian is simply magnifico and is filled with Genoa salami, pepperoni, ham, melted Provolone, Italian dressing, seasonings and served fully loaded.  Mamma mia is this good! All of my favorite meats combined and the melted Provolone makes this sub simply irresistible.

My kids had a wonderful time and even taught some of the some of the girls how to play Angry Birds.  This was my first time bringing them to a blogger event and I was a little worried.  They ate subs and chips and enjoyed everything.

They each received a fireman’s hat and now enjoy eating at the location on South Dale Mabry.  I can’t thank everyone at Firehouse Subs enough for their hospitality.
