Smokin’ Wings at Alex’s Southern Style Bar-B-Q

Happy Wingsday! I am VERY excited about my feature today, as it was a place that I stumbled upon during my travels. This afternoon I was in Carrollwood for a dental appointment and as I was headed back to my office I spotted a smoker out in front of a strip mall with a sign that said “Alex’s Southern Style BBQ.” I rolled down my car window and the scent of smokey BBQ enticed my taste buds and I made the turn into the parking lot. I had a feeling I was in for a tasty treat.

Walking in, I was captivated by the decor of sports memorabilia and newspaper articles. From my experience, some of the best food comes from places where the walls of the establishment are adorned with newspaper articles and signed pictures of athletes.

I approached the counter was warmly greeted by the friendly staff.  As I read over their menu, my mouth began to water. Ribs, beef, pork, chicken and hamburgers to name just a few.  I was craving some good old-fashioned Southern BBQ but as soon as I spotted wings, I knew I had to order some.

I ordered wings and was delighted to learn that they came with two sides.  How cool is that? With lots of items to choose from including BBQ beans, cole slaw, potato salad, fries, onion rings, corn on the cob and greens, I went with fried okra and mac & cheese.  The wings come prepared with their secret sauce and let me just say, it ROCKS!

Slightly sweet with a bit of tang, their secret sauce is fantastic.  Similar to a Honey BBQ, it has some kick to it and really complements the wings. Tender, juicy and fried just right, their wings are outstanding. I intended to just eat a few and wound up eating half the order.

The sides were like a delicious bonus and the fried okra was some of the best I have ever tasted. The breading was perfect and thinly coated the okra, thus accentuating the flavor. I could not stop eating it!  Equally as delicious was the mac & cheese. Lightly tossed in cheese, it was seasoned to perfection and tasted like a secret family recipe.

As I finished my lunch, I spotted some Sweet Potato Pie. I can never win when I am up against my sweet tooth. Just as I figured, it was incredible.

My lunch today was a pleasant surprise and I am anxious to go back and try more of their menu items.  If you are in the area, be sure and stop by for a delicious meal and friendly service.
