Datz the Way (I Like It)
I am getting hungry just thinking about Dine Tampa Bay’s upcoming restaurant week from August 3rd-August 17th. During this two week event, you can enjoy exclusive prix fix menus at some of your favorite restaurants in the Tampa Bay area. This is a great opportunity to try some new places or visit some of your favorites. Menus will consist of an appetizer, and entree and a dessert. Recently I attended an event at Datz sponsored by Dine Tampa Bay and Foodspotting. Ok, let me just say that Foodspotting has become my latest obsession. If you are not familiar, Foodspotting is an app designed for your smartphone where you upload pictures of your favorite dishes. You can then share your delicious photos with not only your Foodspotting followers but on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and even Foursquare. I can’t tell you how many dishes I have tried and fallen in love with after seeing them on Foodspotting. If you are currently using Foodspotting, I would love for you to follow me. By now I am sure you all know how much I love Datz. It is my number one place for everything and I mean everything. With an unbelievable menu that is constantly featuring mouth-watering items, Datz continues to be on the cutting edge in the Tampa Bay culinary scene. They are my number one place to take out-of-town visitors as well as just going out for an evening of cocktails and girl talk. I have attended numberous events at Datz as well as shopped for some of the coolest foodie items in their marketplace. Every week they feature Foodtruck Fridays from 3-6 pm with different trucks each week. Nobody does it better than Datz, period. They recently came out with an app that you must download. It rocks!
The Foodspotting at Datz was, of course, nothing short of awesome. With so many of my favorite food bloggers in attendance, I had a wonderful night of delicious food and great conversation. We were greeted with, are you ready for this……..POPSICLE COCKTAILS! The first one I tried was the Florida Citrus which consisted of a lucious popsicle made with Florida’s finest citrus juices and served in a snifter with sparkling wine. As the popsicle melted into the wine, the flavors intensified into a slushy, refreshing treat. WOW! Simply amazing.
My partner in crime had the Blueberry Lemon Popsicle Cocktail and was kind enough too give me a few sips. It was pure bliss.
Our first course was a Watermelon Salad with pickled red onions, feta cheese, arugula and finished with a chili-lime salt. I really enjoyed this salad! It was refreshing and perfect for a warm summer night. The chili-lime salt was the perfect touch on this dish and reminded me of my numerous trips to Mexico where I tried so many different fruits sprinkled with chili powder. To this day, I still put lemon juice and chili powder on fruits like mangos and melon. I highly recommend this salad.
Our next dish was a fun one. I mean, what else can you expect from Datz? I was excited as it was something I have never had before….Poutine. If you are not familiar, Poutine is a dish that originated in Quebec and can be found across Canada and many places in the Northern United States. Traditionally it consists of french fries topped with brown gravy and curd cheese. Datz gave this dish a “datz-over” by topping crispy fries with a cheddar cheese curd demi-glace and then topping it with an egg, sunny-side up. Genius! This was über yummy and I loved the addition of the egg. This would make the perfect hang-over dish after a fun night out.
Next up was my favorite and I really urge you to go try it RIGHT NOW! Datz has done it again with their Fish N’ Crisps. Holy cannoli was this good! Beer-battered Atlantic cod that is fried to a crispy perfection and served with their mouth-watering housemade chips. The dish is then dusted with a malt-vinegar powder and served with tartar sauce and fresh lemon. Seriously delish!
Our Fish N’ Crips were followed by yet another special item….Blood Orange Push Pops! Seriously Datz, you had me at blood orange. These creamy delights of blood orange gelato were topped with candied orange peel and were incredible.
A few of us that stuck around after the event got a special treat. We were able to try another new menu item, the Rillette. This was a unique dish that I really enjoyed. Whipped mortadella mousse topped with dried cherries and toasted pistachios and served with toasted brioche. The dish is then drizzled with a yummy fig balsamic. Pistachios, brioche and fig balsamic……..three of my favorites all on one dish. I took a nice piece of brioche and topped with with the mortadella mousse and added a generous scoop of pistachios and cherries and I was in seventh heaven. This would be perfect to share with friends and a nice glass of bubbly.
Once again, Datz did a fabulous job with everything and I was honored to be a part of this event. Foodspotting is a wonderful app and I hope you will download it if you haven’t done so already.
