Mackenzie’s Sports Tavern
Happy 4th everyone! Today I am kicking off “Wingsday” on my blog and each Wednesday I will feature a post on the best chicken wings in the Tampa Bay area. Everyone has their favorites and I am going to have a tasty time checking out the best wing spots in Central Florida.
Today I want to share a special little spot that I discovered just a few months ago…..Mackenzie’s Sports Tavern in South Tampa. Located at 4015 S West Shore Blvd in the Circle K plaza and next to the Green Iguana, Mackenzie’s is a great spot to grab a beer and relax with friends. My first visit to Mackenzie’s was just eight months ago and it was that night that I had some of the best chicken wings I have ever tasted! My friend Juan had been raving about them for months so I decided to order some and see what the hype was all about. I saw that the wings were available medium, hot, XXX and spicy BBQ. I went with hot with a side of blue cheese dressing and celery. As soon as my order was up, he looked at me and said, “Trust me, you will love them!” He was right! I do not know what is in their special sauce recipe, but man, let me just say that it is AWESOME! The blend of spices is perfect and the wings are jumbo, so an order is nice and filling. I asked the owner what the secret was but he would not tell me. I can’t blame him because if this was my recipe I would not want to share it with anyone.
Aside from wings, Mackenzie’s has a nice selection of traditional bar food items such as jalapeño poppers, potato skins, fried pickle chips and chips and salsa. In addition they offer some Florida favorites like boiled peanuts and stuffed potatoes. If you are in the mood for a little more, they have a wonderful selection of sandwiches and burgers.
Since my first visit to Mackenzie’s back in October, I have become a regular, especially on Friday nights when they have karaoke. A lot of my friends head to Mackenzie’s every Friday and I will usually meet up with them after I finish my bartending shift and enjoy wings while watching karaoke. The bartenders are wonderful and service has always been terrific. Mackenzie’s only serves beer and wine, but they recently added Sake and Mimosas to the menu. I had a Mimosa with my wings the other day and it was excellent.
Be sure and stop by Mackenzie’s Sports Tavern if you are craving wings and happen to be in South Tampa. I promise you will not be disappointed! I know where I will be this coming football season.
